Are you starting Medicare soon? Watch this educational video. Medicare 101

How is Medicare changing in the year 2020?

Starting on January 1, 2020, if you are new to Medicare on or after this date you will not be able to choose a Plan F, high deductible F or Plan C. If you are on Medicare prior to this date, you may purchase these plans whenever you want, assuming you qualify medically. The government believes that by requiring Medicare beneficiaries to pay for their Part B deductible this will lower medical overuse, such as ER visits.

Will I have to drop my Plan F or C?

If you are on Medicare prior to 01/01/2020 you will be “grandfathered” and can continue to keep your Plan F, HDF or Plan C.

Plan F

It’s important to know, like any other “lettered” plan offering from a supplement company, all plan letters must offer the same coverage. You shouldn’t confuse the Parts of Medicare (Part A, B, C, and D) with the plan letters offered from insurance companies (Plans A-N). The plan offerings (A-N) cover what’s left over from the Part A and Part B of Medicare.

Plan F has long been considered the “Cadillac” plan. It offers “first dollar” coverage and it is the Plan that people choose if they wish to never have to see a co-pay or deductible. Meaning that from day one, doctor visits, specialist, ER visits, inpatient or outpatient surgery, etc. are covered at 100%. As long as it’s a Medicare-approved procedure, the supplement plan must pick up the remainder amount.

Plan F also covers you for foreign travel. Medicare A & B do not cover you while you are traveling abroad, but Standard Medigap Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide foreign travel emergency health care coverage when you travel outside the U.S.

  • Covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip and if Medicare doesn’t otherwise cover the care.

  • Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year.

  • Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.
