What is Part A of Medicare? Video explanation (Click HERE)

Part A of Medicare, or hospital insurance, covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

Here’s a breakdown of what is covered under Part A:

  • Inpatient hospital care: This includes a semi-private room, meals, general nursing, and other hospital services and supplies.
  • Skilled nursing facility care: If you need to stay in a skilled nursing facility after a hospitalization, Medicare Part A covers up to 100 days of care.
  • Hospice care: Medicare will cover hospice care if you have a terminal illness and a doctor has certified that you have six months or less to live. This includes nursing care, medical equipment and supplies, and counseling for you and your family.
  • Home health care: If you are homebound and need skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or speech-language pathology services, Medicare Part A may cover these services.

It’s important to note that while Medicare Part A covers many hospital-related expenses, it does not cover everything. For example, it does not cover long-term care, private-duty nursing, or most dental care. Additionally, there may be deductibles, coinsurance, and other out-of-pocket costs associated with Part A coverage.

Part A of Medicare typically starts the first day of your birth month. If you are born on the first of the month, you will start Part A one month early.

There is no monthly premium for Part A if you or your spouse has worked and paid into Medicare for at least ten years.

You will pay the following for Part A if you are hospitalized in 2023.

Days 1 through 60 = $1600 deductible (Can be paid multiple times per year)

Days 61 through 90 = $400 a day

Days 91 through 150 = $800 a day (once these days are used, they are gone forever)

After day 150, you are responsible for 100% of the hospital stay.

Part A also covers skilled nursing care. This is inpatient rehab after a hospital stay. Medicare will cover the first 20 days for free. Days 21-100 would cost you $200/day. After day 100, you will pay 100% of the cost.

As you can see, a simple hospital stay can cost you thousands in any given year.
