Plan G

Plan G works like Plan F once you have met your annual deductible. In 2023 that deductible is $226. Once you have paid that in total each year, you will no longer see any out-of-pocket expenses, just like plan F. Even better, Plan G is typically about $300-500 less per year (depending on your state).

That’s right, every day, I speak to Medicare supplement clients that pay around $400 more per year just so the insurance company can pay their $226 deductible. Why not pay it yourself, and you can pocket the remaining $200-300? And just like Plan F, you can go to any doctor or hospital nationwide that accepts Medicare, and there is no network. All companies handle claims the same way, so there’s no worry that something might not get paid. If Medicare covers their portion, the supplement plan must also cover theirs.

Plan G also covers you for foreign travel. Medicare A & B do not cover you while you are traveling abroad. Still, Standard Medigap Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide foreign travel emergency healthcare coverage when you travel outside the U.S.

  • It covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip and if Medicare doesn’t otherwise cover the care.

  • Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year.

  • Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.
