Plan N is one of the more newer plans. It was released in the summer of 2010. Its purpose was to offer a lower cost option to Plan G and F and incorporate co-pays that typically are very low.
The main bullet points on Plan N are:
You are responsible for the annual deductible ($198in 2020)
You may pay up to $20 for any doctor visit (usually less than $20)
You may pay up to $50 for an E.R. visit (waived if you are admitted)
You are responsible for any excess charges. This charge can be up to 15% if a doctor accepts Medicare but does not accept assignment to Medicare (this is rare)
Most clients tell us that after their small deductible, they never see a bill of more than $15. It’s a great plan to save on premiums because they are much less than Plan F and cheaper than Plan G as well. Clients usually save up to $50 per month over Plan F.
If you are leaving a group or employer plan, Plan N is a close comparison to what you were used to.
So to give an example of what your cost would be, it would look like this:
You pay Medicare’s Annual deductible = $198 and then…
Doctors visits = Less than $20
Specialist visits = Less than $20
Emergency room visit = $50
Inpatient/Outpatient hospital = $0
Surgery = $0
Cancer = $0
You get the idea.
Plan N also covers you for foreign travel. Medicare A & B do not cover you while you are traveling abroad, but Standard Medigap Plans C, D, F, G, M, and N provide foreign travel emergency health care coverage when you travel outside the U.S.
Covers foreign travel emergency care if it begins during the first 60 days of your trip and if Medicare doesn’t otherwise cover the care.
Pays 80% of the billed charges for certain medically necessary emergency care outside the U.S. after you meet a $250 deductible for the year.
Foreign travel emergency coverage with Medigap policies has a lifetime limit of $50,000.
