I’m turning 65 soon

Watch this video to learn more Medicare 101

Starting Medicare can be a confusing time and chances are you fall into one of three categories:

  • You’ve been on your employer plan that has covered your healthcare
  • You have an individual insurance plan through the Affordable care act (ACA) or also known as Obamacare.
  • You’ve gone without insurance for a short or lengthy period of time

No matter what the situation, it can be stressful to try and figure out “what do I do now?”.

In most cases, you are starting Medicare for the first time because you are turning 65 years old soon. Your mailbox has been inundated with information about Medicare plans in your area, but nothing to really guide you on what to do to start it. The first thing we find out from our clients is if they are collecting social security income or not. If you are collecting social security benefits, your Medicare Part A and B card will come automatically in the mail usually about 3-4 months before your birth month. For example, if you were born on December 15, you will receive your card automatically sometime in September if you are collecting social security (SS). If you are delaying social security for a later date, you will need to sign up for Medicare manually.  At My Medicare Hotline, we can help you through the process or you can do it on your own at www.socialsecurity.gov.

The next step is to know what Medicare includes for you. Most people have heard that it covers 80% and you pay the rest. But in fact, there are other deductibles and co-pays that are in addition to the 20% that is left over. It’s important you know ALL the deductibles, co-pays and Medicare’s monthly premium before moving on to the next step. To learn this year’s information, you can contact us at My Medicare Hotline or you can go to http://www.medicare.gov and read through the dearth of information on there. We have simplified the information and we can share with you what we have learned over the years.

Once you know what Medicare covers, you will want to look at one or more of the following options:

If you currently have health coverage from your employer and you still plan on working after your turn age 65, you may not need to sign up for Medicare Part B yet. If you go without Part B (medical) you could be penalized for the rest of your life, unless you have creditable employer coverage. I have dozens of clients who at age 65 are still working and elected to stay with their employer plan until they retired. Once retired, contact My Medicare Hotline to find out how to start your Medicare benefits at any time, without any penalty.
